How Twitch clips work
Guide · October 23, 2026
A clip is a short piece of a Twitch broadcast or video with its own link. It's the quickest way to save and share a great moment, and it's often all that's left of a stream once Twitch deletes the full recording.
How long a clip is
Between 5 and 60 seconds. When you make one, Twitch takes the last seconds of what you were watching. Before publishing it, you can move the start and end and give it a title.
Who can make clips
By default, anyone with a Twitch account can make clips of a channel while watching the broadcast or a saved video. The streamer decides whether clips are allowed on their channel and whether only followers or subscribers can make them. The channel's moderators and editors can make clips even when the channel limits them to followers or subscribers.
How to make one
- While watching a broadcast, tap the clip button (the clapperboard icon) or use the shortcut Alt+X (Option+X on Mac).
- Adjust the start and end by dragging the edges, between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Give it a title and publish it. The clip gets its own link you can share.
Who owns a clip
A clip's content belongs to the streamer (and to the people in it), not to the person who cut it. That's why clips stay on the streamer's channel, and the streamer can delete them. Twitch still keeps track of who made each clip: on AllTimeClips you'll see it as "clip by" followed by the name.
How views are counted
Each clip has its own view counter, separate from the broadcast. A clip can get far more views than the stream it came from, because it gets shared on social media, on Discord or on other sites. Plays with Twitch's official player, like the ones on AllTimeClips, count as views too.
When a clip disappears
A clip is not deleted when Twitch deletes the recording of the broadcast, or because it's old. It disappears if:
- The streamer or the person who made it deletes it.
- Twitch removes it for breaking its rules or because of a copyright claim.
- The channel stops being available.
When a clip disappears from Twitch, it also stops playing on AllTimeClips, because it plays from Twitch.
Where to find clips
- On the streamer's page, in their clips section, sorted by views over 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days or all time.
- In each Twitch category, with the same periods.
- On AllTimeClips, for any date: a day, a month, a year or an exact range. See how to find old clips by date.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make clips from a saved video?
Yes, as long as the video is still available. The clip gets the date you made it, not the date of the broadcast.
Can I download a clip from AllTimeClips?
No. AllTimeClips shows clips with Twitch's official player and doesn't download them, because they belong to their creators. If you want to use a clip outside Twitch, see how to share clips while respecting their creators.
Why can't I find a clip I saw years ago?
It may have been deleted, or the channel may no longer exist. If not, search for it by date with the low-view option turned on.
