Why doesn't a clip have the full broadcast?

Guide · October 23, 2026

You find a great clip, you want to see what happened before and after, and the broadcast is gone. It's not a bug: Twitch deletes broadcast recordings (VODs) after a while. The clip, however, stays.

How long Twitch keeps a broadcast

If the streamer has saving past broadcasts turned on, Twitch keeps them for:

ChannelTime
Most channels7 days
Twitch Affiliates14 days
Partners, or streamers with Turbo or Prime60 days

After that, the broadcast is deleted automatically. The streamer can also delete it sooner or never save it at all.

Highlights: parts of a broadcast that don't expire

Before a broadcast is deleted, the streamer can save parts of it as highlights, which don't expire. Since April 2025, Twitch limits highlights and uploads to 100 hours per channel. If a channel goes over that limit, Twitch deletes the least viewed ones first. Clips don't count toward that limit.

What happens to clips

Clips are independent from the broadcast: they keep existing after the VOD is deleted. That's why, for streams from months or years ago, clips are often all that's left. They have their limits: they last 60 seconds at most and only show what someone chose to cut.

How AllTimeClips shows it

When you open a clip, if Twitch still has the full broadcast, the Full VOD tab lets you watch it from the exact moment of the clip. If the broadcast no longer exists, that tab is disabled and you'll only see the clip. A VOD that Twitch deleted can't be recovered.

What you can do when the broadcast is gone

Frequently asked questions

Why can I watch an old clip but not that day's broadcast?

Because Twitch stores clips separately and doesn't delete them over time. The broadcast, on the other hand, expires 7 to 60 days later.

Does Twitch delete old clips?

Not because of their age. A clip disappears if the streamer or the person who made it deletes it, if Twitch removes it or if the channel stops being available.

Can I watch a broadcast that hasn't been deleted yet?

Yes. Open the clip on AllTimeClips and use the option to watch the broadcast from that moment, or go to the channel's videos section on Twitch.
